All foregoing Bible history and literature has anticipated one single life – that of Jesus of Nazareth.  Our next two quarters of study will survey the adult life of Jesus from His biographies (gospels).  The first quarter will cover the majority of His ministry which is centered in and around Galilee; the second will examine the last days of Jesus’ life in Perea and Judea.

Our survey of the Old Testament concludes with a study of the exile (Ezekiel and Daniel), the return of a remnant and the renovation of Jerusalem (Ezra, Nehemiah, Haggai and Zechariah), the threat of Jewish extermination (Esther) and Malachi’s warnings against revived sinfulness.  The quarter ends with a look at Daniel’s visions of the future.

The Decline and Fall of Judah (Y2, Q3)

In this study, Judah will follow Israel down the same path of decline and destruction.  The time span from Israel’s fall to Judah’s is 120-140 years.  We will study the historical accounts of the last kings of Judah along with the “minor” prophets Zephaniah, Nahum and Habakkuk.  We will conclude with the life of Jeremiah and his Lamentations over Judah’s demise.

The Decline and Fall of Israel (Y2, Q2)

This study centers upon the spiritual, moral and political decay which caused Israel’s downfall.  Attention will also be given to conditions in Judah during Israel’s decline.  The history of 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles will be studied along with the prophets whom God sent to the people:  Amos, Hosea, Isaiah and Micah.  Special emphasis will be given to Messianic passages.

Early History of the Divided Kingdom (Y2, Q1)

This study covers the period from the division of the kingdom (931 B.C.) through the reign of Jeroboam II in Israel (753 B.C.).  We will study the historical texts of 1 Kings 12 – 2 Kings 14 and 2 Chronicles 10-25, concentrating on the kings of Israel and Judah.  We will also study the prophetic work of Elijah and Eli-sha as well as the literary prophets Obadiah, Joel and Jonah.

This study covers the wisdom and poetry literature of the Old Testament, most of which was produced at the height of Israel’s power and prosperity.  We will study selected portions of Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon.  For topical reasons we will also give attention to the book of Job, though it likely dates from earlier times.

This study covers the development of Israel from a loose association of tribes to a unified nation with centralized government.  The historical accounts of this period are 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 Kings 1-11, 1 Chronicles, and 2 Chronicles 1-9.  We will study the lives and reigns of Saul, David, and Solomon with emphasis upon the Davidic covenant.

This study covers Joshua, Judges and Ruth with a special emphasis upon God’s promise to Abraham that his descendants would inherit the land of Canaan.  We will study the conquest and settlement of the land by Israel and their failure to fully subdue their enemies because of persistent disobedience.

This study covers Genesis-Deuteronomy with a special emphasis upon God’s covenant with Abraham.  We will trace the development of a nation from Abraham’s descendants, the covenant God made with them, and their preparation to conquer the land which God had promised to them.
